Otoplasty: The aim of this surgery
The most frequent problem that occurs in the ear flaps is the «prominent ears” (protruding ears). This is due to a congenital anomaly in which the construction of antihelixes is not completed (antihelical flattening). In many cases hypertrophic concha coexists.
This problem is corrected by otoplasty which is of minor difficulty, which in adults can be done under local anesthesia and requires an incision in the posterior surface of the ear, which is not visible.
In children, the operation may be performed from the age of 6-7 years, since at this age 80% of the cartilage ear growth has been completed, but it requires general anesthesia, because children are not cooperative.
Postsurgical
The ears are covered with bandage for 5-6 days. Care should be taken when sleeping for 2-3 weeks and a protective bandage is recommended. Avoidance of dangerous sports for same time is also advised. The sutures are absorbable and the knots are cut after 3 to 4 weeks.
The final result is visible after about a month, although from the first week the difference is obvious. The results of otoplasty are permanent and definitive.
Possible complications
Possible risks of surgery are formation of hematomas or infections. Also there is a risk of skin necrosis of the flap, if high pressure is applied in the first postoperative days. For this reason, patients are advised not to lie down on the ears for about 2 weeks.
Moreover a hypertrophic scar or a keloid scar may appear depending exclusively on the healing mechanism of the patient.
In such a case, although is not easily visible it can be improved.
The result of otoplasty is permanent and final.
After a period of about 2 months the desiral result can be observal.
