Abdominoplasty: The aim of surgery
Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure used to flatten the relaxation of the abdomen , by removing the excess fat and skin and by restoring the weakened muscles.
An abdominoplasty is indicated :
- After a massive weight loss where excess skin is greated .
- After pregnancy when distention of the abdominal muscles appears.
- After repeated weight gain and loss causing laxity of the anterior abdominal wall.
In cases of severe obesity an abdominoplasty is recommended after the loss of the excess weight. In some cases a simultaneous liposuction is required.
Description of the surgery
The operation is performed under general anesthesia .
The surgical incision and the scar left depends by the technique and the amount of excess skin. In normal cases a horizontal incision is required and placed into the public area and extended lateraly .
In cases of coexisting muscles destination the muscles should be retightened. A vacuum drain is placed for few days.

The legs must be folded slightly towards the belly to loosen the stitches .
To release the tension of the stitches, the body torso should not be extended and the legs should be kept bended towards the body.
After being discharged a compression garment for 2-3 months should be warm.
Bathing allowed after removal of drains. Sports activities should be avoided for at least 8 weeks.
Possible complications
In rare cases, there may be parts of necrotic tissue which create a widened scar. In such a case a corrective reoperation will be required under local anesthesia. Scars may become red and painful, because of the tension.
A rare complication is thrombosis, which is likely to cause embolization . It is prevented by administering anticoagulants and doing physical therapy exercises.
The feeling of tension after surgery can last 2-3 months.
After a period of about 2-3 months the desired result can be observed.
