Gunecomastia

Γυναικομαστία

Etiology

The common cause is the normal hypertrophy of male breasts, which appears during puberty because of hormonal disorders.

Gunecomastia: The aim of this surgery

The aim of this surgery is to remove the hypertrophic mammary gland. The treatment of this problem is exclusively surgical. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The male breast is removed by a semicircular incision at the lower border of the areola. The segments are sent for histological examination for safety reasons. When removal of the skin is required the incision is made periareolarly .  In many cases liposuction is performed simultaneously in the region.

Postsurgical

Light pressure is required with a special garment, for 2-3 weeks. Strenuous physical exercise and stress should be avoided in the first days. The sutures are absorbable and only the knots are cut after 2 weeks.

Possible Complications

Postoperatively, bruising and swelling in the area are normal. The most common complication is collection of serous fluid (seromas) in the cavity after removal of the mammary gland. For this reason vacuum drains are placed for 3-5 days

The possibility of hematomas or infection is very small and is treatable.

Very rarely a small necrosis of the areola can occur, which may require a small corrective surgery under local anesthesia after 2-3 months.

After a period of about 2-3 months the desired result can be observed.

Strict adherence to the doctor’s instructions is essential for good results.
